This is a short read (which inspired the movie Precious) about an African American girl who's suffered physical and sexual abuse and incest and is trying to better herself in a difficult world. Actually kind of reminded me of Flowers for Algernon in it's limited 1st person narrative that develops as the character matures. Not uplifting, but true to life and a quick read.
